Roots at the Forum Homini - Cradle of Humankind, Muldersdrift

About an hours drive from Jo'burg lies a true gem. Situated on a private game farm, this restaurant is one component of a unique & fascinating boutique hotel, the Forum Homini. The atmosphere is relaxed yet refined, as is the food. Thank you Phillipe (chef patron), pictured below!

Roots is an experience of note - the only thing you need to take is good company... just make sure you've got nothing else planned for that day, since it's hard to leave here...

The 6-course set meal served on Sundays (accompanied by some good jazz) changes daily, depending on the availablitity of the freshest ingredients, many of which are sourced from the game farm on which the restaurant is located. You also have the option of having wine "teasers" with each course - basically a fair measure of good wines that complement each dish.
We started off with a crocodile pate, served with olive marmalade & foie gras.

Next on the menu was this delicious seared salmon accompanied by asparagas, a hollondaise sause & pesto drizzled around the plate. Definitely one of the favoured courses of the day!

Another favourite was the duck, served with watercress, basil & topped with a tempura prawn. A wonderful taste sensation.

Before the duck, we were served with another fantastic tasting plate - the quail (properly deboned) & stuffed with cous cous.
Following the duck was a meat dish - kudu, done rare, served with mashed potato & butternut.

The meal was completed with these three deserts. A goatscheese & nougat cheesecake (with sesame snap), layoured chocolate cake & baklava. Honestly, we weren't blown away with the desert, but the tastes were definitely complemented by Ouma se Wyn, the desert wine/Muscadel that completed our tastings.

Don't leave without having a cafe (&a cigar if that tickles your fancy). The coffee comes with the best biscotti & nougat...

Bon appetit!
